Zola was born in exile in 1967 and educated in Swaziland and Tanzania. From 1987 to 1989 he was a member of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the African National Congress.

From 1992 he studied at the National Film and Television School, Beaconsfield, UK. Here, he specialised in directing documentaries.

Recent projects include DRUM (2004), Maseko's first feature film, which won the Etalon d'Or de Yennenga, the top award given out at FESPACO, Africa's largest film festival, in 2005. DRUM also featured at the Toronto Film Festival, London Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival and the Cannes Film Festival.

His latest film, THE MANUSCRIPTS OF TIMBUKTU (2009), won the Walter Mosley Award at the Real Life Documentary Festival in Ghana.

His other films include THE LIFE AND TIMES OF SARA BAARTMAN (1998)which won the Best Newcomer Award in South Africa, and Best Documentary Prize in Burkina Faso, A DRINK IN THE PASSAGE (2002), and THE FOREIGNER (1997). Zola has been featured on a list of the 50 best African artists for his work.

Zola is passionate about adapting Mda's THE WHALE CALLER for the screen, and believes it will be a great contribution to South African cinema.
