Dir: John Akomfrah, Ghana/Great Britain 1988, 76 min, Engl. subtitles
Historical archive footage, dream sequences and political reflections are interwoven to create a complex experiment that is intensified by the ritualistic music: twenty years after Ghana's socialist experiment under Kwameh Nkrumah, a former activist returns to her home country as a reporter. She is supposed to do a report on Werner Herzog's Cobra Verde, part of which was filmed in a former slave fort in Ghana.
As seen through the lens of Akomfrah, we witness cultural and spiritual exile, dispossession and recovering personal memory of Ghanaians' political and personal lives, post independence.
