African Expatriate workers in Paris talk about everyday life and racism on the labour and housing markets. The chanson from which the film takes its title sings of misery on people's own doorstep. Hondo then switches to another mode to continue his analysis of social conditions: never has the post-colonial state of the world been summarised as succinctly as in the closing animated sequence.

Afrikanische Migranten in Paris sprechen über ihr Leben und den alltäglichen Rassismus auf dem Arbeits- und Wohnungsmarkt. Das Chanson, aus dem der Filmtitel stammt, besingt das Elend vor der eigenen Tür. In einer anderen Tonart setzt Med Hondo die Analyse der Verhältnisse fort: Knapper als in der animierten Schlusssequenz hat man die postkoloniale Weltlage noch nicht auf den Punkt gebracht.

Geboren 1936 in Atar, Mauretanien. Ende der 1950er-Jahre emigrierte er nach Frankreich, wo er in Paris eine Theatergruppe gründete und sich dem Film zuwandte. Mitte der 1960er-Jahre begann er mit den Dreharbeiten zu seinem ersten Spielfilm Soleil Ô, der international Aufmerksamkeit erregte. In seinen darauffolgenden Filmen thematisierte Hondo die Geschichte des afrikanischen Kontinents und dessen Diaspora. Er starb 2019 in Paris.
