Die frei nach einem Roman von Mario de Andrade (1928) gestaltete Filmkomödie erzählt die Irrfahrt von Macunaíma, einem "Brasilianer, der von Brasilien gefressen wird, einem Helden ohne jeden Charakter", der zahlreiche Abenteuer erlebt. Nachdem er sich frei zwischen Vergangenheit und Gegenwart, Wald und Grossstadt, Erde und Himmel bewegt hat, kehrt er, Verkörperung aller Widersprüche Brasiliens, in den Urwald zurück, wo er schliesslich von einer Fluss-Sirene getötet wird.

Kommentar
Der Filmheld trägt den Namen eines Geistes aus dem nördlichen Amazonien, der die Erde, die Pflanzen, die Tiere und den Mann schuf und nach der Schöpfung der Frau erwachte. Rasch gewann der böse Geist die Oberhand, und Macunaíma rächte sich, indem er die Erde überschwemmte. Der Film bezieht sich in ironischer Weise auf diesen Mythos, aber auch auf die Stadtguerilla, die Aufhebung der Bürgerrechte und die Unmöglichkeit, seit der Ausrufung der Militärdiktatur 1964 andere Meinungen zu vertreten. Er setzt sich mit den Problemen der nationalen Identität, des Kolonialismus und des künstlerischen Engagements auseinander. Als Satire über den Kannibalismus zu verstehen, ist Macunaíma der repräsentativste Film der "tropikalistischen" Bewegung, die auf das Bedürfnis hinweisen will, alle ausländischen Einflüsse in ein "Nationalprodukt" zu verwandeln, indem möglichst häufig auf Allegorien zurückgegriffen wird.

Synopsis

A drama loosely adapted from a book by Mario de Andrade (1928), the film tells the odyssey of Macunaíma, "a Brazilian devoured by Brazil, a hero without the slightest character", who has many adventures. After having freely wandered between past and present, big city and forest, heaven and earth, and embodied all the contradictions occurring in the country, he returns to the jungle and ends up getting killed by a river siren.

Comment

The hero of the film takes his name from a spirit of the northern Amazon, who created the earth, plants, animals and man, and who awakened after the creation of woman. Soon the negative spirit took over, and Macunaíma took revenge by flooding the earth. The film makes ironical use of this myth as well as of the references to the urban guerrillas, the suspension of civil rights, and the impossibility of dissention since the military dictatorship of 1964. It brings up the problems of national identity, colonialism and artistic engagement. A satire on cannibalism that uses allegory more often than not, Macunaíma is a film that best represents the "tropicalist" movement, whose aim it is to stress the need to transform all foreign influences into a "national product".
