MORO NO BRASIL is more than a musical road movie. It is a stirring and passionate documentary from the Finnish film-maker Mika Kaurismäki about the multifaceted varieties of Brazilian music - beyond Samba and Bossa Nova.
The musical journey that Kaurismäki makes in MORO NO BRASIL is 4,000 kilometres long. Stations are Pernambuco, Bahia and Rio de Janeiro: three Brazilian states which stand symbolically for musical styles such as Frevo, Maracatu, Coco, Embolada, Forró, and Samba.
MORO NO BRASIL - "I live in Brazil" - is Kaurismäki's declaration. About ten years ago, he found a second home in Brazil and was fascinated by its musical wealth. His choice of musicians and styles is very personal and by concentrating on the music heard in the streets, he reveals a Brazilian passion for life which rings true.
Brazilian music is as multi-cultural as the influences that have marked the country since its colonisation about 500 years ago. The local origins as well as the cultural traditions of African and European immigrants are reflected in the variety of instruments, rhythms and musical styles found in this huge country with its 170 million inhabitants.
MORO NO BRASIL is a journey of discovery in which Kaurismäki travels from musician to musician, each with a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm, meeting men, women, children, singers and dancers. The film shows how people have grown up with music and how they have been affected by music in a powerful way. Music is an integral part of Brazil's daily life; it is also used to express feelings spontaneously.
The film was shot during one hot tropical summer. Atmospheric pictures of landscapes, which have already inspired the poets of the country, add a special magic to MORO NO BRASIL. The musical wealth, the colourful costumes, the spontaneous impressions, the pleasure in life and the relaxed lifestyle of the people in MORO NO BRASIL turn Kaurismäki's documentary into a film for heart and mind.

MORO NO BRASIL - "Ich lebe in Brasilien" - lautet Kaurismäkis Bekenntnis.
